Best Place to Work & Grow

Why Millennials Love Working at CoverMyMeds

By Drew Schaar2020-08-06

Millennials are the largest generation in the labor force — forming 35 percent of American workers. The generation is changing the workplace — and office culture — as employers adapt with new tools, processes and policies that promote innovation, collaboration and flexibility.

Millennials grew up with technology. They typically thrive in environments where they can easily and often interact and share ideas. Most members of this generation also prioritize flexibility to work when, where and how they want — and to have the freedom to express their individuality.

Like many other businesses, a large percentage of our people are millennials. Today, the spotlight shines on this generation as we celebrate being recognized as a best place to work and grow for millennials.

Millennials are searching for purposeful work. They can find that here at CoverMyMeds. Our people are deeply connected to our mission of helping patients. It inspires the work we do every day, and the impact of that work provides purpose.

“Millennials are searching for purposeful work. They can find that here at CoverMyMeds,” said Michael Bukach, senior manager of employee engagement. “Our people are deeply connected to our mission of helping patients. It inspires the work we do every day, and the impact of that work provides purpose.”

Mission, purpose and impact are huge motivators for CoverMyMeds recruiter Allie White. As a member of the millennial generation, she describes why it’s so important for her work to align with her beliefs.

“You spend so much time working, and it’s such a large part of our lives that I want to make sure I feel good about the work I am doing and the integrity of the company I am working for,” Allie said. “Working for a company that helps patients and gives back to the community — and empowers and encourages me to do the same — has had such a significant impact on the professional that I am and the work that I do.”

Allie describes an opportunity that pairs her work with her passion to help others. She shares her time and expertise with the community by assisting organizations — including [Jewish Family Services] (https://jfscolumbus.org/job-seekers/) and [Columbus Works] (https://www.columbusworks.org/) — and their members with workforce readiness programming, spending time with jobseekers to coach them on interview tips and skills.

In addition to a mission that matters, a set of five shared [core values] (https://experience.covermymeds.com/core-values/be-yourself) shape our culture. Among them: [Be Yourself] (https://www.covermymeds.health/insights/articles/be-yourself-celebrating-individuality-in-a-big-way). At CoverMyMeds, this means you don’t have to look or think a certain way to be successful. We embrace inclusiveness and diversity, and count on solutions coming from everyone in the company. We value results rather than politics. We’re respectful of each other’s views and commit and move to win as a team. We celebrate our victories and have fun with our colleagues. We know our work is serious, but we believe we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously.

It allows me to be better at my job because I don’t have to spend all of that energy thinking about how I am coming across, how I can fit some mold or what’s expected of me. Instead, I’m able to use that energy to think creatively and solve problems.

“I’m able to laugh, joke around and share my life at work, and I’m more energized because of it,” said Allie. “It also allows me to be better at my job because I don’t have to spend all of that energy thinking about how I am coming across, how I can fit some mold or what’s expected of me. Instead, I’m able to use that energy to think creatively and solve problems.”

Allie calls out another important aspect of “Be Yourself” — allowing others to be themselves, too. That, she says, creates an authentic space that’s not an exception, but rather a standard. That’s echoed by Deanna Springs, lead technical recruiter.

“Forming relationships and developing trust by being authentic — and allowing others to do the same — leads you to do better work. That’s what ‘Be Yourself’ is all about,” Deanna said. “I feel valued and respected. I feel like the warm welcome is reciprocated here.”

Deanna also credits “Be Yourself” with feeling appreciated for who she is and the skills, talents and experiences she has to offer.

If I can feel like myself and not have to adapt to fit in, I feel more innovative and have the freedom to take what I’ve learned over the years and apply it in a way that adds value.

“We truly appreciate and respect what we each bring to the table. I do not see myself as being an exception to that,” she said. “If I can feel like myself and not have to adapt to fit in, I feel more innovative and have the freedom to take what I’ve learned over the years and apply it in a way that adds value.”

We also asked Deanna what it’s like working with millennials, the value they bring to an organization and how the various generations collaborate.

“I know that there are a lot of stereotypes about millennials, but from my experience working with them, I appreciate the ‘can-do’ attitude they bring. They’re a group that says, ‘push me’ and ‘allow me to show you what I can do.’ There’s a fearlessness about them. I love their energy and the honesty in how they do their work,” Deanna said.

Deanna says people tend to think about diversity in terms of gender, race and orientation, but sometimes forget that there is diversity of thought and generation that add value and make an organization successful.

“When bonded together to form a cohesive, well-rounded whole, groups can work in harmony to think in different ways or form a new approach. You could look at a situation and say, ‘that’s not how we do things.’ But instead of settling for that, we have people who say, ‘why not?’ and ‘let’s rethink this.’ You can do that here — it’s like when we know better, we do better.”

Diversity, equity and inclusion are critical components of being the best place to work and grow for our people. We’ve created a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve more — and do it faster — than anywhere else. Being recognized as a best place to work and grow for millennials is a testament to our remarkable culture.
