We're Recognized as One of the Plain Dealer’s 2020 Top Workplaces
We’re excited to announce our recognition by the Plain Dealer as one of the 2020 Top Workplaces. The ranking measures 15 drivers of engaged cultures, including alignment, execution and connection, just to name a few.
The award is a testament to the remarkable culture that binds together all 1,400+ leaders that make up CoverMyMeds. All of us share the same core values — Be Yourself, Do the Right Thing, Be Selfless, Results Matter, Embrace Challenges — and work collectively toward the same mission: help patients get the medication they need to live healthy lives.
It was feedback from those who know our company best — our employees — that landed us a spot on this list. So, we caught up with a few of them to get the inside scoop.
Front end developer Julianne DiLorenzo says the smaller teams in Cleveland are close-knit. She appreciates getting to know teammates through lunchtime board games and fun events, like open houses.
“It’s really fun to get everyone together, show our families where we work, play ping pong in the office and get to know everybody,” Julianne said. “At our last open house, there was even a cupcake truck outside, and my children were so excited about it. They also had a blast playing on the giant bean bag chairs we have sitting around and checking out my standing desk — making it go up and down.”
As a working parent, Julianne appreciates having flexibility at work and usually splits time between working from home and venturing into the office. Though that’s shifted to full-time remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Julianne notes a few creative ways the team keeps connected.
“We play remote games together and have a Slack channel for Cleveland parents, which we use to commiserate with each other,” Julianne said. “Everyone is so supportive and has great ideas. It’s really nice to have a group of people that understand what you’re going through — especially in quarantine — and to be celebrated as a parent at CoverMyMeds.”
Finding unique ways to stay connected is a common theme among teams. Markus West, a Patient Services pod lead, describes how the team virtually recreated aspects of office culture.
“We have a standing video chat every day. We use the time to align on goals, share news and ask questions. We also end with something fun to keep it light,” Markus said. “The other day, we looked at photos of celebrity babies and tried to guess the parents. We’ve also put together a virtual prize wheel, replicating one we had in the office, and take turns spinning it. Seeing everyone’s faces, even if it’s just a few minutes a day, makes a difference and keeps us motivated.”
As far as what makes our culture great, Markus says it’s difficult to narrow the answer down; he likes working with driven people who empower and support him to be at the top of his game. He also enjoys the comradery and being able to let loose and have fun.
“I’m an incredibly competitive individual. Anyone who knows me would be able to tell you that. So, I absolutely love field day,” Markus said. “It was one of the first events I participated in when I joined CoverMyMeds. It was a great opportunity for me to meet and interact with people — especially outside my team. It was really the turning point where I felt like I was at a place that I belong.”
What matters at the end of the day is knowing that our actions really make a difference and help patients.
Field day is also a favorite of Case Manager Michael Hildebrandt. He recalls getting a bit muddy while navigating the inflatable obstacle course and playing tug-of-war. He also enjoyed celebrating sweet, sweet victory with a cookout and joining coworkers at a Cleveland Indians game.
“We’re like a family, I’ll tell you that,” Michael said. “We all know each other — including people in other departments. It’s cool for us to say, ‘hey, how are you?’ and everyone is very friendly and has a good relationship.”
While fun events have connected Michael with his team, it’s the work and our mission that’s connected him with his purpose. He finds it rewarding to volunteer, give back and help patients.
“I really enjoy helping people and I can do that in this role. I feel a connection to our mission, and we all work in harmony together with that same goal in mind,” Michael said. “What matters at the end of the day is knowing that our actions really make a difference and help patients.”
That shared sense of purpose and connection to our mission is a great example of how everyone at CoverMyMeds — whether they work remotely, in Cleveland or in one of our Columbus offices — embraces our culture.
“Our Cleveland employees, in particular, drive a major part of our rich culture, which is more vibrant, lively and close-knit than ever before,” said Michael Bukach, senior manager of Employee Engagement. “Our Highland Hills office also has active employee resource groups which support organizational diversity and inclusion, including Culture Crew, Women in Healthcare IT, Affinity Council, and LGBTQcrew. And, they know how to throw one heck of a party.”
This recognition as one of the Plain Dealer’s 2020 Top Workplaces helps highlight what makes CoverMyMeds unique — our incredible culture built by our employees.
