Where Are They Now? An Update On 2020’s CoverMyQuest Winners

By Michael A. Bukach2021-09-16

CoverMyQuest is an annual contest that awards several CoverMyMeds employees with a monetary prize to pursue a passion, idea or lifelong dream. The tradition has been going strong since 2013, and every employee is invited to participate. In anticipation of this year’s event, we caught up with 2020’s winners to get an update on their journeys.

Our employees are people first — we have families, friends, projects and hobbies that enrich our lives in large ways beyond the workplace. At CoverMyMeds, not only do we encourage our employees’ out-of-office interests — but we also help enable them.

That’s why we launched CoverMyQuest in 2013. Our annual mini-grant contest awards several deserving employees with a monetary prize to pursue a passion, idea or lifelong dream. Anyone at the company can participate, including newly hired employees.

In anticipation of this year’s virtual event to announce the 2021 winners, we connected with 2020’s winners to get an update on their quests and explore any next steps in their journeys. Despite ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, many were able to accomplish their goals.

Sebastian Neiss: support for his children after a family loss

Because of CoverMyQuest, I was able to choose an appropriate school for my kids and hire a tutor to bring them up-to-speed in their studies. They’re both enjoying school very much, and my daughter even made honor roll after three short months! After experiencing such a devastating loss as ours, our lives are much more secure and healthy now — that’s in part because of CoverMyQuest.

Brad Phillips: professional equipment to bake his bread

Thanks to CoverMyQuest, I was able to purchase a full rack of baking equipment. Since I won, I’ve also been able to bake bread and sell it to my family and friends. I even bought pizza boxes to deliver pizza in! This experience has taken my bread baking to a whole new level, and I feel like a real baker thanks to CoverMyMeds and CoverMyQuest.

Samuel Sohnly: a reunion with his Cambodian fiancée (now wife)

I was able to travel back to Cambodia to be reunited with my fiancée after over a year apart! We had a traditional Cambodian engagement ceremony with her family since they couldn't come to the United States for our wedding — it was an amazing experience. Then, my fiancée's visa was approved, and she came to the states in May! We just had a beautiful traditional wedding in July and honeymooned in Florida.

Tiearra Saunders: a proper send-off for her late father

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, my family and I had to hit pause on the urn for my dad, but we plan on scheduling a family meeting to finalize the details soon. However, since winning CoverMyQuest, I was able to purchase much-needed school supplies for my family. Thanks again to the judges and CoverMyQuest!

Cyndi May: recovery support for people with eating disorders

CoverMyRecovery is on the move. I’m communicating with a publisher, and I’m beginning to write down my story on paper detailing my life with anorexia. It’s been an emotional time, but I know if my book helps even one person then it will be worth it. During quarantine, I was also able to use some of the money to put together care packages for a local eating disorder treatment center.

Jackie Tate: a trip for her dad to see his Canadian family

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, I haven’t been able to send my dad to Canada yet to visit his family. However, my parents have kept busy loosely planning their trip and once they’re eligible to enter the country, they will form more concrete plans.

Greg Lindeman: a beer brewing education to honor his dad

As long as I test negative for COVID-19 on Oct. 1, I’ll be admitted into the United Kingdom so I can begin my month-long journey of learning how to professionally brew beer. Everything is currently up in the air with the Delta variant, but hopefully everything goes according to plan, and I’ll be in the U.K. come October.

Rachael Pinckney: a relaxing vacation for her husband

After surprising my husband with the win, we had a conversation about going to Hawaii and discovered that our ideas of “relaxing” aren't quite the same. He didn’t want to travel so far from home and isn’t a huge fan of lying on the beach. So, we compromised and went to Universal Studios. He never went as a child, and it was on his bucket list. Our family had a great time and enjoyed the resort immensely!

Elizabeth McAvoy: a European adventure for her sister-in-law

My original quest was to take my sister-in-law overseas to backpack through Europe. We have planned out where we want to go, our accommodations and sights we want to see, but we haven’t booked yet due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. If everything goes to plan, we will book for May 2022, but we are waiting to see if the Delta variant affects international travel.
